| MATH5004M | Assignment in Mathematics (40cr) |
This module is not approved as an Elective
Students should consult the Mathematics organisation on Minerva or the Mathematics Taught Student Office for details of how to pick a project. The deadline for completing the enrolment process, including the application form and confirmation of an agreed supervisor, is week 1 of Semester 1, but students should submit their project allocation form before the summer break, if at all possible.
To make an extended investigation of an advanced topic in Mathematics through independent study under the supervision of a member of staff.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) search independently through various sources; link together various expositions of the topic;
b) produce a critical assessment of the sources;
c) produce the required project outputs and describe their contents orally.
Depending on their interest and previous modules taken, students may choose an assignment suggested by the department, or put forward their own suggested topic for approval. A supervisor will be allocated to oversee the details of the assignment work.
1. Choice of topic.
Each student will be allocated to a supervisor who will be responsible for the detailed description of the assignment. The material may be available in textbooks, although the development of the topic will preferably not follow any one textbook completely. At least one or two original sources (research papers) should be consulted and cited. Typically the topic will be one not covered by a current lecture course.
2. Supervision.
The supervisor will provide the student with a fairly detailed outline of the contents of the topic, including names or brief descriptions of the main concepts. This will be given in writing to the student and a copy retained by the supervisor. The student will be able to consult the supervisor in case of difficulty. The supervisor may suggest examples for the students to attempt, or modifications of the original assignment.
3. Student's work.
The student will be required to draw up their own detailed notes on the topic, illustrated with many examples. The form of the notes will be specified in the module handbook.
4. Assessment.
At the end of the assignment, the student's outputs, together with the comments of the supervisor, will all be collected together for the final assessment and grading.
More details are given in the Module Handbook.
